What's in the penalty kit

The gear for who runs the zone

Two formats, same build: pick 3 or 5 paddles in the selector above and the kit — case included — follows.

01 / 02 · The paddles

One paddle per penalty time

The number on the paddle is the seconds the athlete serves in the zone, and it depends on the race distance (World Athletics rule TR 54.7.3, table in force since 1 January 2026). The judge raises the one that matches the race.

02 / 02 · The case INCLUDED

A case sized for your format

Included as standard, like on the race walking kit — nobody else ships one. The 5-paddle format gets a new, larger case, built for it: the paddles travel protected and reach the zone ready to use.

Engineered details

The details you feel in your hand

The penalty paddles are built exactly like the race walking ones: same print, same materials, same hand. These are the three details you feel on the course.

DETT.01 Manico zigrinato della paletta penalty in primo piano
01 — Grip

Knurled handle, secure hold

A knurled relief runs the length of every handle, increasing the friction between fingers and grip. Your hold stays firm even with sweaty hands or in the rain — call after call, the paddle never slips at the decisive moment.

02 — Finish

Smooth to the eye, silky to the touch

The first layer is printed on a fine-textured plate: the surface looks smooth and even, yet keeps a silky, semi-rough micro-grain under your fingers. No glossy smears, no spots that bounce sunlight into the judge's eyes — just a clean matte finish that's a pleasure to hold.

03 — Carry

Reinforced hook for carabiners

Every paddle and the case has an integrated hook, reinforced to take tugs and knocks. It accepts carabiners up to 8 mm thick: clip the kit to your belt, backpack or barrier and keep your hands free between one call and the next.

The rule

How the penalty zone works

Set out in World Athletics rule TR 54.7.3: it turns the third red card into a time penalty instead of the end of the race. A fourth red card, from a fourth judge, means disqualification.

The third red card

Three red cards from three different judges no longer mean disqualification: they send the athlete into the penalty zone.

Trigger3 ×

The time penalty

The athlete stops in a coned area and serves a penalty that depends on the distance of the race, in front of everyone.

WhereConed area

Back in the race

Once the penalty is served the athlete goes back out and keeps racing. The race stays alive, and the call stays visible to everyone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference from the race walking kit?

The job. The race walking kit is for judging technique out on the course; the penalty kit is for the officials running the zone, where the third red card becomes a time penalty. Build, materials and print are the same.

Should I take 3 or 5 paddles?

Three cover the zone as it is normally run. Five are for those who want spares in hand, and come with a larger case built for them. You can switch format with the selector at the top of the page.

Is the case included here too?

Yes, as standard, in the size that matches your format — nobody else ships one in the box.

What do the numbers on the paddles mean?

They are the seconds the athlete serves in the zone, and they depend on the race distance (World Athletics rule TR 54.7.3, table in force since 1 January 2026): 30″ for races up to 5 km, 60″ up to 10 km, 120″ up to the half marathon; the 5-paddle kit adds 180″ (up to 30 km) and 240″ (up to the marathon). For the 50 km the rule sets 5 minutes.

Can I order kits for my club or federation?

Yes — use the quote form. Orders can mix penalty and race walking kits.
